Our }{\b\fs18 Red Crested Cardinal}{\fs18 was found dead on the morning of March 8. He was an older bird, having come with us from Dundurn Castle in 1996 and he seems to have died of old age. Then at the end of March our }{\b\fs18 Silkie hen }{\fs18 was found dead in her outside pen. There was a problem with the pen door and it appears that she was killed by a predator. \par We have some good news too though. At the end of April the }{\b\fs18 Ringnecks}{\fs18 (}{\i\fs18 Puff's }{\fs18 parents) were sitting on eggs. The }{\b\fs18 Derbyians, }{\i\fs18 Duchess & Nibbles}{\fs18 had a clutch too but unfortunately the eggs were infertile. However it was their first breeding so maybe they will have better luck next time. In the Cockatiel flight several of the cockatiels are sitting on eggs too. The White Doves in that flight had 3 chicks and one of them has already fledged. \par On a final note when you are outside have a look at our }{\b\fs18 Peacock, }{\b\i\fs18 Frank }{\fs18 and our male }{\b\fs18 Golden Pheasant. }{\fs18 Both birds are in full colour now and are beautiful. What a great display they will make this summer! \par }\pard \qc\widctlpar\adjustright { \par }{\b\i\ul VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION NIGHT \par }\pard \widctlpar\adjustright {On Thursday, April 21 Aviary volunteers were honoured at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Night. After a buffet supper, guest speaker }{\b Kathy Davey of the Parrot Club of Southwestern Ontario }{ spoke about pet care for our birds. Thank you Kathy for your interesting talk. \par Volunteers who have recently completed 40 hours at the Aviary were presented with t-shirts and volunteers who have completed 5 years with the Aviary were given plaques in recognition of their service. \par We thank }{\b Kim Adam of Parkdale School Council }{for providing the delicious supper and }{\b Josephine of Weil's Bakery }{in Westdale for the beautiful and tasty cake. \par Thank you also to Volunteer Coordinator }{\b Dorothy Penny }{for her efforts this year and of course our special thanks to all the volunteers who make our work at the Aviary possible. Every spring the Aviary receives calls and visits from well meaning people who have found baby birds or sick or injured birds. They want information about caring for the birds or ask if Aviary volunteers can look after the birds for them. }{\b Please remember that we can not bring wild birds (especially those that are ill) into the Aviary. They could bring in disease and also it is illegal to keep wild birds. \par }{A baby bird should be returned to its nest (if possible). No one looks after baby birds better than their parents do. \par If a bird is injured but is not bleeding and does not appear to have a fracture, place it in a quiet safe place (a cardboard box is fine) with some food and water. Leave it alone for about 24 hour s. Elizabeth Waters of Hamilton }{adopted a }{\b Zebra Finch }{after touring the Aviary with her mother }{\b Helen.
